WHAT IS YOUR SWEATER MADE OF?

When shopping for knitwear I have become so much more picky than ever before. Since I purchased a Balenciaga turtleneck sweater and experience the true warmth, coziness and comfort I haven’t been able to go back to any other type but only the finest garments. I was chatting about this with my friend Omar and we started to get more in depth with the subject, so I decided to make a quick post on what types of materials we will find and how choose the one that is best for you.

Lets start.

Synthetics: first of all let me say that for more than obvious reasons you shouldn’t ever buy synthetics they are harmful for the environment, wont last as natural fibers, and quality wise they are always a lot worse, even the touch is rough.

Wool: Comes from sheep, can sometimes be itchy and is prone to shrink and peel with heavy use. It is perfect for winter though since it is extremely warm. It is less expensive and more widely available than other types of knits.

Lambswool (Virgin Wool) : Comes from lamb (sheep that are less than one year old) it’s the wool from the first shearing of a sheep when it’s only months old. Its super smooth, soft and resilient so it wont wrinkle easily. Its more expensive and rare since you can only shear a baby sheep virgin’s hear once.

Merino wool: comes from merino sheep, it’s finer than sheep’s wool and it’s less bulky and there is less pilling and shrinkage. Merino is great for keeping you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot so you will find it year round.

Cashmere wool: comes from cashmere goat this is considered the most luxurious type of wool because it is a fine fiber that is stronger, lighter, less itchy and more durable than traditional sheep’s wool. It provides excellent insulation yet can be worn in spring and you won’t overheat. Because it’s rare and harder to produce it is more expensive.

Mohair wool: comes from angora goat. It is very soft and shiny, has a silk-like texture but still has great insulation to keep you warm. Its strong and resilient, so it won’t wrinkle easily.

Angora wool: comes from angora rabbit it is lightweight and fluffy but they still offer great insulation. They are much warmer than traditional wool and perfect for colder weather, however since fibers are more fragile it’s frequent to find them in accents or combined. Angora is also rare and generally expensive.

Alpaca wool: comes from alpacas, it is lightweight, soft, silky and durable. It is similar to traditional sheep’s wool but is warmer and less scaly. Unlike other types of wool it is naturally available in a wide variety of colors.

Yak wool: comes from yak. It’s warmer than merino, as soft as cashmere and as tough as camel. It’s also quite expensive and rare and is often considered the “new cashmere”.

WINTER 2017: OUTFIT 7

So this weekend we went to visit a friend for his birthday down south, the climate there is completely different than here in Madrid. It is so much warmer you really didn’t need a coat during the day, it was fantastic! Sadly I only packed sneakers because well there is no other footwear appropriate for the beach in winter when you can’t wear sandals (it’s not THAT warm), and any other type of shoe might be ruined. I say sadly because this outfit would have been so much better with my Gucci loafers, but that was completely unrealistic.

HOW TO SHOP THE SALES IN A SMART WAY

Trini | SALES

Today I wanted to do a post somewhat different and write about a topic I don’t think has been explored enough. With the sales going on everywhere (at least in Europe) this is the perfect time to shop for almost anything and make the most of your money. Now that sounds easy, but really it has a hidden challenge, how to actually buy smart: what you will really wear for seasons to come, and not end with a bunch of bags with unworn garments with their tags still on, forgotten in Neverland.

I’ve been doing so many smart purchases this month that I am eager to share with you my tricks, after so long I think I have finally mastered the perfect act of shopping the sales in a smart way.

1. PLAN

First and foremost you should build a wishlist of your own (not the wishlist you build online on your favorite shopping sites), simply write down (or type on your phone) every time something you really love comes to mind. I write mine like this: 1. brand – name of style – type of garment – color – price. Write as much stuff as you want because this is actually the planning stage. Even though you wont get all the stuff that you want, having everything written gives you options when something you wanted has sold out in your size.

Now write another list of the things you need, for example I only have two good winter sweaters, and only four sweaters in total, that means that I am in a desperate need of knitwear in general. Now be a bit more specific and list the colors and style of the things you need, example: black turtleneck sweater, black long sleeve t-shirt, etc.

Once you have this information, you should match the things you want with the ones you need, and this will give you a good idea about what your priorities should be when shopping the sales.

2. RESEARCH

Know which stores carry the brands/styles you want and if you are able to try it before hand to see how it fits, even better. That way when the online sales come up, you can buy with confidence and save time in exchange and returns. I would also advice to know (if you are looking for something you need but don’t have anything specific in mind) which brands make the better knitwear, running sneakers, whatever you are looking for.

If you want to go even further you can try and browse the US online sales, that start about a month early that way you can have an idea if the item you want will get discounted or not, and if it will how much can you expect to pay, that way you have your budget on point. Registering on mailing lists of your favorite retailers is also a great option that way you can have access to pre-sales and get early access to all the goodies.

3. STICK TO YOUR WISHLIST

Impulse buys are rarely a good thing, the best thing is to stick to your list, to what you really want and need and start with what is a priority. Leave all the purchases of non discounted items for either before or after the sales, specially if they are permanent, classic items that will never go on sale, you’ll have plenty of time to buy them later. Remember to be patient, sales go by stages and if you are lucky you can snatch something at 70% off!

3. NO SUCUMBIR A COMPRAS IMPULSIVAS

Wearing my new Céline shoes, finally a pair of comfortable every day heels. I was so lucky to snatch the last available pair of these in my size, they were meant to be mine! I can’t really express how comfortable these are, for anyone considering a pair of these (these are from the winter collection, but Céline has new colors available for spring) I highly recommend. This are specially perfect for a day to night ensemble, for the office or just when you want that extra height without compromising comfort (with a 6’3 boyfriend that would be my case).
